Many musicians have been inspired by Virginia Woolf. Here are two more.
- Right here in the U.S. of A., the Seattle band Modest Mouse got its name from a passage in Woolf’s story “The Mark on the Wall.” Here’s how it reads: “I wish I could hit upon a pleasant track of thought, a track indirectly reflecting credit upon myself, for those are the pleasantest thoughts, and very frequent even in the minds of modest, mouse-coloured people, who believe genuinely that they dislike to hear their own praises.”
- And in Italy, the eclectic band Talismanstone counts Woolf as one of many inspirations for its lyrics. The group hails from Ravenna.

[…] this post from 2012 to learn more about music inspired by Woolf and the Bloomsbury […]
Great connection, Alice. Thanks for posting this reference. Woolf is everywhere!
Serendipity all over again. While I treasure every literary allusion I come across, I glaze over at pop music references – I don’t follow it, don’t know the names or the music, don’t much care. Even if they’re singing about or naming themselves after Virginia Woolf. But, here’s a great irony. I’m rereading Lorrie Moore’s “Gate at the Stairs.” Her narrator, Tassie, has an electric bass that she plays in her room with her headset. She tells what she’s playing, & while a few names are familiar – yes, even I’ve heard of Metallica – I tend to find them irrelevant. But I did notice that on two occasions, while mentioning different groups, she included Modest Mouse. It meant nothing – cute name, I thought. And then, the very next day, your post!
