Rebecca Filner, librarian at the New York Public Library’s Berg Collection, doesn’t leave her job behind when she walks out of the Schwarzman Building on 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue.
What that means for me is that after she left work last night, she continued thinking about the Bloomsbury pacifists, the focus of my research at the Berg. And when I arrived this morning for the second day of my Short-Term Research Fellowship, she had some tips to share.
She told me of a recent Berg acquisition, a letter from Lytton Strachey to Duncan Grant. And she also sent me links to unpublished letters from Vanessa Bell to Maynard Keynes currently housed at the Morgan Library & Museum, 225 Madison Avenue at 36th Street in Manhattan, and sent me the link to the reading room application.
Rebecca is another reason why I ♥ librarians.

Paula,
Do you see me across the table? Next to you in the stacks? I’m vicariously at the Berg with you. I’m so glad that you’ve finally launched this adventure & it seems to come at a perfect time for you given recent events.
Interestingly I’ve just finished the second volume of Pat Barker’s WWI trilogy & have been thinking about the Bloomsbury Pacifists when, for instance, Siegfried Sassoon mentions Lady Ott & Bertie Russell & others in that social circle.
I’m looking forward to your day-by-day jottings. I hope you’re also eating fabulous food – at least great pizza – & will squeeze in a few plays & museums.
Alice
Alice, I do wish you were here. It would be fun to chat with you about my finds. Such interesting stuff, whether it relates to my topic or not. Today I noticed how snarky Clive Bell’s early letters to Virginia were. He seems to alternate between being critical and complimentary. Quite a player, if you know what I mean.
I love the Barker trilogy and am glad you are enjoying it too.
I am eating most of my meals at the Penington Friends House, where I am staying. And the food is fantastic! I recommend it to anyone who needs a friendly, hospitable, reasonably priced place to stay in Manhattan.
I do plan to squeeze in some other fun where I can, including visiting with relatives and friends.
