Shakespeare’s Sister: A theater company of our own

Shakespeare’s Sister Company, which brings innovative theater to audiences and theater classes to youth — its young company is named the Bloomsbury Group — was named one of the GreatNonProfits this year. The company also produced Season One of the Woolf Series, a play reading series for emerging female writers.

Plans for next year include: 

  • Romeo and Juliet with an all-female cast, set in the roaring 1920s Chicago amid Italian and Irish  gang rivalries
  • Staged reading of featured new work
  • Woolf Series and Puppet Playdates
  • Inaugural Spring Gala in celebration of SSC’s five year anniversary

Formed in 2008, Shakespeare’s Sister Company is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to women in the theater. Its commitment is to produce plays by female authors, as well as William Shakespeare. Its mission is to address global change through the theater, including workshops with the community and educational advancement.

The quote above and the photo at right introduce an email from Shakespeare’s Sister Company announcing its Aug. 6 production of  emerging playwright, Shellen Lubin’s, new full-length play, War Orphan.

Featuring Cynthia Enfield, Anthony J. Fusco, Matthew Gandolfo, Kris Lundberg and Susan Merson, War Orphan explores two friends’ journeys through love, family and sexual identity from the 1960s to the 1980s.

Showtime is 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at The Delancey, 168 Delancey Street (between Clinton and Attorney). The event is free and is for audience members 21 and over.

It is week seven in the company’s 2012 emerging women playwrights reading series. The final reading of the series will be Aug. 13 and will feature the company’s Artistic Director, Kris Lundberg’s, Muse.

A look at Shakespeare’s Sister reading of “Vanessa & Virginia”

Last Monday, June 18, The Shakespeare’s Sister Company hosted English playwright Beth Wright’s Vanessa and Virginia, which is based on the eponymous novel written by New York Times best selling author Susan Sellers.

Shakespeare’s Sister Co. hosts reading of Vanessa & Virginia June 18

The Shakespeare’s Sister Company is hosting weekly summer play readings from June 18 through Aug. 13 from 6-8 p.m., and the season kicks off June 18 with English playwright Beth Wright’s Vanessa and Virginia It is based on the eponymous novel written by New York Times best selling author Susan Sellers.

Wright’s play premiered in Europe and tells the story of Virginia Woolf and her sister Vanessa Bell. The evening will end with a few scenes from a play written by Shakespeare’s Sister’s, Kris Lundberg, about the love affair between famed artist, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and his muse and model, Elizabeth Siddal.

The readings will commence in a Lower East Side sultry venue, the DL, located at 95 Delancey St. (at Ludlow) in the second floor Casino.

Come to belated NYC birthday tea for Virginia

In celebration of Virginia Woolf’s Un-Birthday and International Women’s Day, the Shakespeare’s Sister Company is hosting a Tea Party and Book Swap in proper British Style, and you are cordially invited.

The event will be held at Lady Mendle’s, 56 Irving Place, between 17th and 18th streets in New York City.

 

Save the Date:  Saturday, March 6

Patrons will enjoy the following:

7 – 7:30 p.m.:  Tea and Mingling
Enjoy an assortment of teas, a buffet of tea sandwiches and scones with clotted cream and jam!

7:30 – 8:10 p.m.:  Literary Book Discussions
Each guest will introduce the title/author of the book, one sentence describing what the book is about, an interesting fact about their favorite part of the book and what kind of book they are looking to swap for.

For those who prefer not to speak, we will provide ink and paper for you to write down your details and an SSC member would be happy to read it aloud on your behalf. We’re all friends here.

8:10 – 8:30 p.m.:  Literary Book Swap
Guests will have the opportunity to trade their book as many times as they’d like. Additionally, the SSC will provide a program listing all of the books being traded for patrons to reference.

8:30 – 9 p.m.:  Tea and Mingling
Enjoy an assortment of teas, a buffet of tea sandwiches and scones with clotted cream and jam!

Our event concludes at 9 p.m. However, patrons are welcome to migrate downstairs to the martini bar and heated outdoor garden for cocktails.

Regarding attire, please come dressed in your British best.  Dresses and suits are encouraged. Hats and gloves are not required, but are encouraged.

All-inclusive admission runs $35 per person.
