Proposals for Woolf panel at MLA 2023 due Dec. 17

Now is the time to submit panel proposals on Virginia Woolf for the Modern Language Association Convention, scheduled for Jan. 5-8, 2023, in San Francisco. Submissions are due Dec. 17.

The International Virginia Woolf Society will have one guaranteed panel on Woolf at the 2023 Convention. The group can also submit one additional panel proposal (which is often accepted but not guaranteed). And it can also collaborate with another allied organization and submit a third panel proposal. These joint panels elicit especially lively, productive exchanges.

Guidelines for submissions

  • Note that this is a call for panel proposals, not individual paper proposals.
  • Please submit one topic only. The submission should include the following:
    • a maximum 35-word description (word count includes title)
    • the name(s) and contact information of the proposed organizer(s)

How to submit

Please submit your proposal to Benjamin Hagen, president of the IVWS, via email to Benjamin.Hagen@usd.edu with the subject line Woolf MLA 2023. The submission deadline is Dec. 17, 2021.

Once proposals are in, Hagen will send them out to IVWS members for a vote. Anyone who wishes to propose a session of their own outside of the IVWS process can visit the MLA website.

How I fell in love with Virginia Woolf

This video was shot at the Virginia Woolf Dinner Party sponsored by the International Virginia Woolf Society during the 2014 Modern Language Association Conference in Chicago, Ill.

At the dinner, which was held Jan. 11, 2014, at Shaw’s Crab House in Chicago, Woolf common readers and scholars were asked to share the experience that sparked their interest in the 20th-century modernist writer.

IVWS dinner at MLA 2015

vancouverlogoIt is a tradition that the International Virginia Woolf Society holds a special Woolf dinner at the annual MLA Convention, which will be held in Vancouver Jan. 8-11.

This year’s dinner is planned, but space is limited. Here are the details:

Date: Saturday, Jan. 10
Time: 7:30 p.m
Location: Water Street Cafe

Cost: $40 for members & $25 for graduate students, and the society encourages professors to sponsor their graduate students, if they wish to purchase tickets for them. The first lucky 40 who sign up win places at the table. You lucky winners will be expected to bring $40 or $25 in cash in an envelope with your name on it, to make the evening as efficient as possible. No charge cards.

ivwsociety@gmail.com will win seats at the table. Last year’s dinner was limited to just 30.

Menu: Crunchy Baby Greens Salad, Sunshine Coast Seafood and Corn Chowder, and choice of one entree from the following: Grilled Wild B.C. Salmon, Parmesan Crusted Chicken Breast, Veal Scaloppini or Spinach and Ricotta Cheese Ravioli; and Tiramus for dessert. Wine included.

Calling Woolf papers for ’09 MLA Convention

top_mla_logoThe International Virginia Woolf Society traditionally sponsors two panels at the MLA Convention each year. Proposals for the MLA’s 125th annual convention, which will be held in Philadelphia Dec. 27 to 30 this year, are due March 15.

Abstracts for the following Woolf panels are being accepted:

  • Twenty-First-Century Woolf. A panel discussing Woolf’s continued relevance in and for the new century. According to conference organizers, topics might include transnationalism, new feminisms, the current wars, emerging commercial strategies, blogs and the common reader and more. Abstracts should total 300-500-words and be sent to Elizabeth Outka, panel chair, at eoutka@richmond.edu by March 15.
  • The Uses of Illness: Woolf and Medical Narratives. Illness is a dominant theme in Woolf’s work. This panel explores her narrative strategies writing illness, including the physical, psychological, social and ethical. Abstracts of 500 words are due by March 15 to David Eberly, panel chair, at david.eberly@chtrust .org. Use the subject line “Woolf MLA Panel.”
